SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - If the Menlo College softball team didn't have bad luck it would have no luck at all. Playing each game down to the wire, the Oaks came up short twice in its final California Pacific Conference doubleheader of the season, losing 5-4 and 3-2 in extra innings to end their campaign.
Each of the Oaks three losses to Bethany this season came by one run in eight inning games. For the season, Menlo was snakebitten in close games, posting a 2-12 record in games decided by three runs or fewer including a 2-5 conference record in those situations. The Oaks lost seven times by one run.
Menlo received a good pitching performance in each game on Saturday, but managed to come up just short. In the opener, Mikayela Viramontes pitched the final six-plus innings in relief and didn't surrender a run until the Bruins scored the winner in the eighth. Viramontes allowed four hits and struck out two.
Menlo was forced to play catch-up after falling behind 4-0 in the first inning. The Oaks eventually caught up with one run in the third inning and three more in the fourth, but never took the lead.
Viramontes - who entered the game with only four at bats in conference play - was her biggest offensive supporter, going 2-for-4 with a double, home run, and three RBI's. Tenea Golson was 2-for-4 with a run, Angela Woerz singled and drove one run in, Serina Stephens and Nadia Le'i each singled and scored, and Courtney Emry singled.
In the nightcap, Jessica Cobb went the distance, limiting Bethany to three runs on 12 hits. Cobb struck out one and walked five, never allowing more than one run in an inning.
The teams traded runs in the season finale. Menlo led 1-0 and 2-1 with runs in the third and fifth innings. Bethany tied the score with runs in the bottom half of the same innings.
Stephens finished the nightcap 2-for-4 with an RBI while Ululani Reyes was also 2-for-4. Le'i doubled and scored a run in her only at bat, Woerz doubled, and Joedee Lovell singled.
Menlo finishes its season 1-15 in the Cal Pac and 6-32 overall. Bethany ends up 3-13 in conference and 8-29 overall.
