ATHERTON, Calif. - Menlo College could nearly field a starting lineup of nationally recognized student-athletes after eight Oaks were named to the All-Independent team selected by the Association of Division III Independents, the organization announced Thursday. In addition to the eight players honored, head coach Matt Daily was selected Coach of the Year after leading Menlo to the brink of the NCAA Div. III Playoffs in just his second season in charge of the program.
Junior pitcher Adam Koontz, senior pitcher Brian Priestley, sophomore shortstop Chris Mazza, and junior center fielder Joel Hull were selected First Team All-Independent while freshman pitcher Sean Sweeney, senior first baseman Shane Parsons, sophomore second baseman C.J. Dailey, and freshman third baseman Michael Brandi were Second Team All-Independent picks.
The Oaks enjoyed a 22-15 season during which they chalked up five wins against nationally ranked opponents. Menlo just missed out on qualifying for its first NCAA Div. III Regional Tournament. Six of the Oaks losses - or 40 percent - came against nationally ranked teams.
Menlo's success during the 2010 season was due in large part to the strength of its pitching staff anchored by starters Priestley and Koontz. Priestley led all Oaks who pitched at least 15 innings with a 3.13 earned run average over 83 1/3 innings pitched. He finished with a 5-4 record and a team-high four complete games, striking out 51 batters while limiting opponents to a .256 batting average.
Koontz got better and better as his first season at Menlo wore on, pitching a no-hitter at Occidental on April 20 and finishing with an 8-2 record. Koontz had a 3.25 ERA over 72 innings, striking out 60 and limiting opponents to a .234 batting average. He pitched three complete games and two shut outs, including one against No. 2 Chapman. Both Priestley and Koontz made 13 appearances and started 11 games.
Mazza started every game at shortstop for the second consecutive season and led the Oaks in batting, posting a .347 average. His 50 base hits were good for first on the team, as were his 38 RBI's, 11 doubles, and .646 slugging percentage. Mazza smacked eight home runs and scored 34 runs.
Hull was a fixture in the Oaks lineup, starting all 37 games in the outfield and serving as the leadoff batter. The speedy junior was second on the team with a .326 batting average and 45 base hits while leading the team in runs (36), walks (28), and stolen bases (12). Hull also had four home runs, seven doubles, and 28 RBI's. Starting mostly in center field, Hull made a number of fine defensive plays and covered as much ground as one could expect of anyone at the position.
Parsons enjoyed a fine senior season, supplying power in the middle of Menlo's batting order while finishing with a .986 fielding percentage. He led all Oaks with 10 home runs and posted big numbers across the board. Parsons batted .296 with 40 base hits, nine doubles, 36 RBI's, 30 runs, and a .600 slugging percentage.
Brandi stepped right in and started at third base from day one. The freshman showed plenty of pop in the heart of the Oaks lineup, batting .290 with 38 hits, seven home runs, six doubles, 26 RBI's, 31 runs, and a .496 slugging percentage, enjoying a great start to his Menlo career.
Dailey was another new face at Menlo and excelled immediately, starting all 37 games like Brandi. The smooth second baseman showed off a slick glove that led to a .983 fielding percentage and helped turn 22 double plays. At the plate, Dailey hit .281 with 38 hits, five doubles, two home runs, 26 RBI's, and 23 runs scored.
Sweeney was part of a standout group of newcomers on the mound, and posted a 3.67 ERA over 34 1/3 innings. Sweeney made 10 appearances, finishing with a 2-1 record in four starts. Opponents batted just .268 against Sweeney, who totaled 15 strikeouts.
Through two seasons, Daily has led Menlo to a 39-34 record and a .534 winning percentage. The Oaks face 11 ranked teams during the 2010 season and will make the move to the NAIA for the 2011 season. Menlo, which returns every regular starter aside from Priestley and Parsons, will have high expectations during its next campaign as it looks to qualify for the postseason for the first time.
