ATHERTON, Calif. - Menlo College alum Robbie Nelson has signed a contract to spend the 2010 season with the Edinburg Roadrunners of United League Baseball, it was announced Tuesday. Nelson, a left-handed pitcher, will begin the season in middle relief as the staff's only southpaw.

Nelson took part in the Roadrunners week-long training camp which culminated with an exhibition against the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings on Monday night. As one of 14 pitchers competing for only 10 spots on the pitching staff, Nelson entered the game in the second inning and needed just 13 pitches to retire all four batters he faced in 1 1/3 innings of work.

The Roadrunners open their 93-game UBL season on Thursday night at the Coastal Bend Thunder in Robstown, Texas. The UBL is a six-team independent league in Texas which includes the Roadrunners, Whitewings, Thunder, Amarillo Dillas, Laredo Broncos, and San Angelo Colts. The UBL Playoffs take place from Sept. 1-8.

During his four-year Oaks career, Nelson was used on the mound, as well as in the field. As a senior he made eight appearances on the mound, striking out 11 batters in 10 innings of work. Opponents batted .256 against the hard-throwing lefty. After graduating from Menlo in 2009, Nelson played for the Seminole County Naturals of the Florida Winter Baseball League.
