WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Menlo College was competitive, but ultimately lost each of its matches on the opening day of the Whitman College Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Oaks dropped their opening match to Pacific Lutheran, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18, and lost later in the day to Whitman, 25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 25-16.
 

In the opener, setter Jessica Atthowe recorded 20 assists and 10 digs for the Oaks while Mia Ortiz finished with five kills, 11 digs, and two assists. Shelby Goldman added 18 digs, Stephenie Monderine totaled seven kills and nine digs, and Stephanie Wertz and Briana Moreno each had five kills.

 

Against the hosts the Oaks won their first set of the day, but it was a case of doing too little too late. Atthowe exploded with 43 assists while Monderine had 17 kills - both for match highs. Moreno and Selina Bumb tallied eight kills apiece, Mika Mendoza had seven kills, and Goldman had another 19 digs.

 

Menlo is now 0-4 on the season and plays two more matches to finish the tournament on Sunday. The Oaks take on Puget Sound at 9 a.m. before facing the Loggers again at 3 p.m. in the third place match.
