WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Faced with the task of taking on a nationally-ranked foe twice in a row to close out the Whitman College Tournament, Menlo College came up short both times on Sunday. The Oaks finished the tournament in fourth place.
In the morning Menlo fell to No. 25 Puget Sound, 25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 25-15, before losing again in the afternoon, 25-23, 25-22, 25-10.
Junior setter Jessica Atthowe kept up her torrid pace to start the day, leading Menlo with 43 assists while Stephenie Monderine and Briana Moreno finished with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Mia Ortiz had 22 digs, Shelby Goldman added 14 digs, Amanda Sutter totaled seven kills, and Selina Bumb also had seven kills.
In the nightcap, Atthowe had another 25 assists to go with 10 digs. Monderine finished with 15 digs and five kills, Moreno had seven kills, Goldman accumulated 12 digs, and Emelina Garcia had 11 digs. Sutter and Stephanie Wertz each finished with five kills.
Menlo is now 0-6 and will play next Friday and Saturday at the Warrior Classic on the William Jessup University campus. The Oaks play Vanguard and Southwestern on Friday before taking on the host, Bethany, and Dominican on Saturday. Puget Sound is 2-2 overall.
