ATHERTON, Calif. - Trailing by a goal at the break, Menlo College turned the tide on Academy of Art in the second half and came within inches of winning in overtime only to earn a 1-1 draw on Thursday afternoon at Wunderlich Field.
A slow start gave way to a breathless second half in which both sides had numerous chances to win, trading one attack for another. The Oaks had the clearest chances during the 20-minute overtime, but couldn't capitalize on some excellent passing and overall team play.
Menlo's halftime deficit didn't last long into the second half. Less than three minutes in, Christine Rodriguez led Amanda Torres into the left side of the Academy of Art penalty area with a through pass. Torres caught up to the ball and sent another perfect pass, this one a low cross, to Kellie Detweiler, who drove the ball into the net with her first touch. It was 1-1 in the 48th minute.
Detweiler nearly gave the Oaks the advantage within 10 minutes, but Urban Knights goalkeeper Melissa Co made one of many fine saves to keep it level. In the 67th minute, Detweiler came within a whisker again, this time sending a shot off the post. Just minutes earlier it was Academy of Art's Brittany Schramm who fired a shot off the crossbar looking to give her team the lead.
Natalie Schader was excellent in the goal for Menlo, making 13 stops to thwart the Urban Knights attack. Detweiler fired off five shots as a constant thorn in Academy of Art's side while Torres and Rodriguez each finished with two shots.
Academy of Art's goal was scored by Emi Sullivan off an assist from Hannah Emmett. Sullivan ran down a chipped pass and knocked the ball by Schader in a one-on-one situation.
Menlo is now 0-1-1 and returns to action at NCAA Div. I Sacramento State on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Academy of Art is 1-1-0.
