Beautiful Hidden Brooke Golf Club in Vallejo, CA was the site of the Menlo 2011-12 Golf Team debut, playing in the annual Cal State Maritime Invitational. Receiving crucial contributions from a number of their golfers, the Oaks took home a third place finish much to the delight of Head Coach Bill Imwalle. "For our first performance of the year, I would say we did well," claimed Imwalle. "This is a good start and I am confident we will continue to improve as the season progresses."
A mixture of strong veteran showings combined with a newcomer putting up a stellar round was really the difference for Imwalle's squad in the third place mark. Second year players Trevyn Reese and Patrick McNamara each accumulated total scores of 161 over 36 holes of play. "Trevyn performed brilliantly, he was very consistent over the two rounds and really improved from last year," remarked Imwalle on the sophomore from San Diego. "Patrick is always very steady, he's a grinder and 161 is definitely a solid score for him."
Menlo Park native and first year player Cameron Showecker put together the finest round of any Oak and one of the best of the tournament, shooting a second round 76, much to the chagrin of the aforementioned Imwalle. "I was impressed with the way Cameron handled the pressure in his debut," commented the Oaks head coach. "He seemed more comfortable as the day progressed and I would imagine that we could see him shoot rounds under 80 throughout the year."
The Oaks will quickly return to action with the Menlo Invite this Tuesday, September 27th at the Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course.
