In the latest edition of the Menlo-Holy Names rivalry, both the Oaks men's and women's basketball teams get set to travel to HNU on Thursday, January 26th. Another edition of the storied Cal Pac rivalry, Menlo-Holy Names, is ready for action. Both teams are battling for conference supremacy as the two squads come in with 3-1 Cal Pac records to put them in a second place tie behind the Keelhaulers of Cal Maritime who are 5-0 in conference. The Lady Oaks will be looking for their first victory over the Hawks since the 2007-08 season when they beat them 73-58 back on January 10, 2008.
1-2 - For the past four seasons it's been Holy Names and Menlo who have dominated the California Pacific Conference landscape. The Hawks and Oaks have finished #1 and #2 respectively, making each chapter of the rivalry even more intense.
Conference Commonality - Both schools have beaten the same three opponents in the Cal Pac (Simpson, Pacific Union, William Jessup) and have lost to the same one as well (Cal Maritime). The Oaks average margin of victory in their three wins is 17.3 while the Hawks stand at 13.3 points per victory in their three conference tilts.
Experience Inside Tobin Gymnasium - Aside from playing inside HNU's Tobin Gymnasium year in and year out, the Lady Oaks took part in the HNU Tipoff Tournament back on Nov. 4-5. Menlo went up against Biola and College of Idaho in their two contests.
Double Digit Dominance - The Lady Oaks enter the latest edition of the rivalry with three players averaging double digit points in conference. Lauren Adamek, Erika Garcia, and Jolise Limcaco are all putting up at least ten PPG in the Cal Pac with Adamek leading the charge at 11.5.
Menlo and Holy Names get set to renew their rivalry as the Oaks travel to Tobin Gymnasium this Thursday. Menlo enters the contest with a 2-3 conference mark to put them in a four team log jam for third place along with William Jessup, Pacific Union, and UC Merced. The Hawks hold the second spot in the conference with a 4-1 record and Cal Maritime continues to set the pace with a perfect 6-0 Cal Pac mark.
Added Story Line? - As if there ever needed to be any extra flavor to the Menlo-Holy Names rivalry, the Oaks fell to the Hawks in last year's postseason conference tournament semifinals to end their magical 2010-11 year. Thursday will mark the first time that the two teams will meet since HNU knocked Menlo out, 94-81, last February 25th.
Splitting Up - For the past three seasons the Oaks and Hawks have split their two regular season meetings. The last time a team swept the regular season series was back in the 2007-08 campaign when Menlo won both tilts by finals of 70-46 and 81-72.
Two Man Wrecking Crew - Menlo's Tim Tatum and ChaRunn Jones will look to continue their assault on the 2011-12 season as they enter Thursday night's tilt. Tatum is averaging a double-double in conference with 19.0 PPG and 12.6 boards and has also scored at least ten points in 14 straight games. As far as Jones is concerned, he is putting up 16.6 PPG in the Oaks' five Cal Pac contests.
