Courtney Calicdan and Nicole Yap combined for 35 kills, as the Lady Oaks came from behind to take out UC Santa Cruz (6-8) for their second straight victory. Menlo had dropped the first set 25-18, but kicked it into high gear in capturing the next three sets by final scores of 25-13, 25-23, and 25-9. The win pushes the Oaks record to 5-6 on the year.
The numbers speak for themselves in Menlo's comeback victory. The Lady Oaks compiled just an .087 team successful attack percentage in the first set, but ripped off stellar percentages of .357, .300, and .370 over the next three games. Calicdan paved the way with a match high 19 kills and a remarkable .633 successful attack percentage, while Yap wasn't too shabby in her own right with an impressive 16 kills and a .300 successful attack percentage.
Senior Angie Larsen and sophomore Emma Oehler each had 16 assists in the "W," trailing only Santa Cruz's Kaitlyne Fisher who had a match high 30. Senior Mika Mendoza led the Lady Oaks with nine digs, while the Banana Slugs' Jessica Peng topped all players on the court with 19.
Menlo will now head into California Pacific Conference play riding a two match winning streak, as the Lady Oaks get set to clash with Simpson University on Friday, September 28th inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion. Action is set to get underway at 7:00pm.
