ATHERTON, Calif. – Menlo College Women's Wrestling had a strong effort on Friday afternoon in the annual Women's Open hosted on the Atherton campus. The Oaks had a total of 18 wrestlers compete and saw three of them take down top honors in their weight class. While no team score was reported, Menlo had a great day against competition from Warner Pacific University, Simon Fraser and Eastern Oregon among other independent and unattached wrestlers.
Hiba Salem was Menlo's first weight class winner and she did so with a perfect 3-0 day. She began the day with a 10-0 tech fall victory over Mai Xiong of Fresno State and followed that up with a 10-0 tech fall over Lisa Megargee of Eastern Oregon. Her final match of the day was a forfeit victory over Karah Bulaqui of Simon Fraser to secure first place.
Autumn Pacheco also claimed top honors in her weight class, 109 pounds. Pacheco won her first three matches via tech fall over two Simon Fraser opponents and one Menlo foe to set up a final match against Cassidy Freeman of Eastern Oregon. Freeman and Pacheco locked into a classic that saw the Menlo wrestler claim a razor-thin 7-6 victory to become the second Oak to earn a tournament victory.
The final wrestler to win her weight class was Caddy Chessin who competed at 116 pounds. Chessin earned back to back 4-0 decision wins over Jessica Dehart and Makayla Grimm and earned a forfeit victory to claim top honors. Melanie Cordero was another Oak to finish at the top of her weight class, claiming second place honors at 130 pounds as did Solin Piearcy who did the same at 136 before falling in her final match by way of injury default.
Next up for Menlo is the Oregon Classic hosted by Southern Oregon and Warner Pacific in Redmond, Ore. on Jan 14.
