SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Menlo College Women's Soccer opened up the 2017 season on Thursday afternoon in a neutral site match against #7 Keiser University (Fla.). The match, which was hosted by The Master's University in Santa Clarita, went the way of Keiser as the Oaks were unable to notch its first goal of the season, falling 3-0. Keiser improves to 1-0 as they begin their quest for a 12th-straight conference title.
The game was scoreless through the first 36 minutes but a lopsided 1.5 minutes of play shifted the tides. The Seahawks scored a pair of goals within 1.5 minutes of action to take a commanding 2-0 advantage. Menlo continued to battle, but struggled to keep the ball in the attacking third and were unable to get many shots off in the process. In total, Keiser outshot Menlo 12-0 in the first half before the two goals were scored.
The final goal of the match came in the 80th minute to bring the final score to 3-0. Menlo was outshot 29-4 including a 14-3 deficit in shots on goal. Alana Kualapai led the way with two shots on goal with the third coming from Cheyenne Frias. Maya Mogensen made six saves in the first half while Caitlin Sorensen played between the posts for the first time in her Menlo career, making five saves.
Menlo returns to action on Saturday in Santa Clarita as they take on Marymount, California University at 1 p.m. The Oaks then return home on the 29th for the home opener against University of Antelope Valley.
