MERCED, Calif. – Menlo College Women's Soccer stuck to its winning ways on Sunday in Merced as they scored twice and held the Bobcats scoreless in 2-0 shutout victory. The non-conference win improves Menlo's current winning streak to three games and the Oaks snapped a two-game streak for the Bobcats which included wins over Academy of Art and Oregon Tech. With the win, Menlo improves to 3-1-1 with one match remaining before GSAC play. UC Merced fell to 2-3-1 overall with the loss.
The first goal of the match came in the 30th minute when Alana Kualapai found the back of the net for the first time this season. The Kualapai goal was the fourth of her career and first since the 2015-16 season as she dealt with injuries during the 16-17 campaign. The 1-0 advantage would hold throughout the half, and the goal would eventually prove to be the game winner. Total shots were dead even between the two teams in the first half, tied at four apiece.
The second half saw the Oaks gain a bit of breathing room in the form of an Alexis Von Schottenstein goal in the 74th minute. The goal was her second of the season and seventh for her career. It proved to be a big boost as the Bobcats dominated the attack for much of the second half but the Oaks' defense held strong. The Bobcats outshot Menlo 8-2 in the final 45 minutes with Kaylin Swart making a remarkable six saves to bring her game tally to nine.
Menlo now prepares for a road trip to Tahoe where they will take on Sierra Nevada on Thursday afternoon at 12 p.m. They will open up conference play next Thursday at #13 The Master's University followed by a Saturday meeting with #6 Westmont.
