ATHERTON, CA. –11/06/2004- Menlo College jumped out to an early 14-7 lead, but Pacific Lutheran scored five unanswered touchdowns to capture the 42-21 victory Saturday afternoon in Atherton. The Lutes (6-2) gained 352 yards on the ground against the Oaks (1-6), who did most of their damage through the air, throwing for 325 yards and three scores. The two teams combined for 982 yards of offense on the day.
Menlo got on the board quick, when on the second play of the game, freshman Dustin Guglielmelli connected with senior Marvin Stickel on a quick slant and Stickel did the rest sprinting through the secondary for the score.
As quickly as the Oaks scored, the Lutes came right back with a 13 play-89 yard drive, caped by a one yard plunge by quarterback Dusty McCauley to tie the score at 7-7.
In the second quarter, Menlo continued to work the short passing game into Lute territory. The Oaks worked the ball down to the Pacific Lutheran 12 yard line, but a holding penalty and a Lute sack moved the ball back to the 32-yard line and set up a field goal attempt for senior Ray DeSenna. The Lutes came up with a huge special teams play, blocking the field goal attempt, while trying to seize the momentum.
The momentum was short lived though, as McCauley would cough up the football, giving it to the Oaks on the Lute 30-yard line. The Oaks looked to Stickel once again to take the lead, and he delivered with a 17-yard touchdown catch from Guglielmelli to make it 14-7.
Trying to protect it’s lead, the Oaks focused on containing the dangerous Pacific Lutheran run game, but with 7:23 left in the second quarter, McCauley burned the Oaks secondary on a beautiful play fake that fooled almost everyone in the stadium, as he tucked the ball on his hip for at least three seconds before unloading a 62-yard scoring strike to Mark McCall to tie the game. McCauley threw for 212 yards on the day, going 11 for 20.
That score was the first of five straight, four of which were on the ground for the Lutes. The running game was lead by Anthony Canger, who led the team with 112 yards. McCall ran for 82 yards and caught two passes for 78 yards. He had three touchdowns on the day. Ryan Simpson also had two running scores for the Lutes to go with 55 yards on the ground.
Menlo added a late score when sophomore Adam hazel hooked up with tight end Keith Marin for a seven-yard touchdown. It was Marin’s first touchdown of the season.
Stickel had a great game for the Oaks, playing in his final home game of his career. He hauled in eight catches for 123 yards and two scores. Guglielmelli threw for 197 yards, going 18 for 28. Freshman Eddie Conner led the Oaks ground attack with 65 tough yards.
Next up for the Oaks, they play their last game of the regular season, as they take on Concordia College Friday, November 12 at 7:30 PM in Fargo, North Dakota.
