Koontz capped off a stellar first season with the Oaks by winning his final five decisions to post an 8-2 record with a 3.25 ERA. In his final six starts the junior right-hander posted a 5-0 record with a 1.83 ERA over 39.2 innings pitched. During his season-ending flourish, Koontz allowed just eight earned runs with a 2.1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The highlight of Koontz' campaign - and possibly the Oaks season - came on April 20. On a Tuesday afternoon in Los Angeles, Koontz pitched the first no-hitter in program history as Menlo hammered Occidental 15-0 in seven innings. The powerful junior college transfer struck out seven and walked two after the Tigers first batter of the game reached on an error.
After one season as an Oak, Koontz ranks in the top 10 in the program's record book in single-season ERA, innings pitched, and strikeouts. He is just the third Menlo pitcher to win eight or more games in a season.
