Stefan McGovern enters his first season as Menlo College Head Baseball Coach after a successful tenure as assistant coach of NCAA Division II Metro State College of Denver. McGovern was a member of Roadrunners since 2009 and as hitting coach his team racked up a number of impressive offensive numbers during the 2011 campaign. The squad averaged 8.7 runs per game in the 2011 season, a mark good enough for 6th in the nation, while the team's .330 batting average ranked 17th in the country.
Before the success at Metro State, McGovern helped guide Santa Barbara City College to a wealth of impressive accomplishments as the assistant coach from 2006-2009. Two out of McGovern's three seasons in the mix, SBCC reached the Southern California Regional Playoffs, including winning their first conference championship since 1972. The school also set program records for wins in a season with 34, conference victories with 20, and shattered offensive marks with a .332 team batting average, 49 HR's, and 161 SB's in the '07 year.
McGovern has also spent the last three summers at three of the country's top Summer Collegiate Baseball Leagues. In 2011 McGovern was the field manager of the Rochester Honkers of the Northwood's Summer Collegiate League, the year before he was the head coach of the champion Denver Cougars of the Rocky Mountain Summer Collegiate League, and in 2009 McGovern was an assistant coach of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaskan Summer Collegiate League.
As a player McGovern enjoyed a storied career as an outfielder, playing his first two collegiate years at Santa Barbara City College before joining San Francisco State for his last two. He played his high school ball at local powerhouse Bellarmine College Prep.
A Bay Area native, McGovern earned a Bachelors of Science from San Francisco State and a Masters from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama. He currently resides in San Mateo.
